Experience

Chris Ahalt started flameworking in 1998 at the age of 21. While attending Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) he apprenticed with a friend and local flameworker to learn the basics. Chris then graduated from MCAD in 2000 with a B.F.A. in sculpture/furniture design and began working full-time in the glass arts.

A turning point came in 2001, when he took intensive workshop with Emilio Santini at the Pittsburgh Glass Center. There he first learned (and fell in love with) Venetian-style goblet techniques. After a few years practicing these techniques, Chris took a second workshop in 2004 with Santini’s teacher, and internationally known flameworking master, Cesare Toffolo at the Eugene Glass School. The following year, Chris traveled to Venice, Italy for further study with Toffolo during a month-long apprenticeship. Chris spent the next couple of years processing the techniques he learned in Venice — as well as learning the nuances of fatherhood with his newborn daughter Amara.

In 2007, Chris returned to the Pittsburgh Glass Center to study with Israeli master Alex Arbell, learning rare techniques that incorporate metal patina applications. Since this time Chris has focused his attention on developing original ideas and finding new creative energy, with the help of a new studio environment.
